2027 HSA contribution limits
For 2027 you can put up to $4,500 in a health savings account with self-only coverage, or $9,000 with family coverage. That’s $100 and $250 more than 2026. The IRS set these amounts in May.
- HSA limit, self-only coverage$4,5002026: $4,400

Who can contribute
You can put money in an HSA for any month you are covered by a qualifying high-deductible health plan (HDHP) on the first day of the month and have no other health coverage that pays before the deductible. You also can’t be enrolled in Medicare or be claimed as someone else’s dependent.
A plan qualifies for 2027 if its deductible is at least $1,750 for self-only coverage or $3,500 for family coverage, and in-network out-of-pocket costs are capped at $8,700 or $17,400.

HSA limits over the last three years
| Year | Self-only | Family | Catch-up at 55 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 | $4,500 | $9,000 | $1,000 |
| 2026 | $4,400 | $8,750 | $1,000 |
| 2025 | $4,300 | $8,550 | $1,000 |
Two different out-of-pocket limits
An HSA-qualified plan has to keep in-network out-of-pocket costs at or below $8,700for self-only coverage in 2027. That is lower than the general limit for all ACA plans, which is $12,000. A plan has to meet the lower one to qualify. See the 2027 out-of-pocket maximumfor the general limit.
New for 2026 and later, a direct primary care arrangement no longer blocks HSA contributions as long as its fixed fee is no more than $150 a month for one person or $300 for a family.
Common questions
What is the HSA contribution limit for 2027?
$4,500 if your high-deductible plan covers only you, and $9,000 if it covers anyone else too. If you are 55 or older by the end of 2027 you can add $1,000.
Do employer HSA contributions count toward the limit?
Yes. Money your employer puts in, including through a cafeteria plan, counts toward the same $4,500 or $9,000 limit. Rollovers from another HSA don’t count.
When is the deadline for 2027 HSA contributions?
You can make contributions for 2027 until the federal tax filing deadline in April 2028, not counting extensions.
What if my spouse and I are both 55 or older?
A married couple with family coverage shares the $9,000 limit and can split it however they like. Each spouse who is 55 or older can add their own $1,000 catch-up, but only into an HSA in their own name.
Can I contribute to an HSA after I join Medicare?
No. Contributions must stop from the first month you are enrolled in Medicare. In the year you enroll, your limit is prorated for the months before Medicare started. You can still spend the money already in the account.
